Chenango County, New York

Chenango County is located in South Central New York State.

  • 50 miles south of Syracuse
  • 30 miles north of Binghamton
  • 210 miles northwest of New York City

A rural agricultural-based county of rolling hills and river valleys, it offers some of the finest scenery in upstate New York. The 2000 United States census reported a countywide population of 51,401 people.

The area has seen it's hard times:

  • Unemployment rates are consistantly higher than the general New York State rate.
  • More that 1,700 jobs have been lost in the county since 1989.
  • The number of family-owned dairy farms decreases each year.
  • Incomes are lower than the statewide average and are growing at a significantly slower rate.
  • Some areas of the county have more than 20% of it's population below poverty level.
  • Some of New York's highest rates of teen pregnancy and high school dropouts can be found in Chenango County.
