The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program has been serving Chenango County since 1995. Funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service, New York State Office for Aging, and Chenango United Way, RSVP currently serves over 350 volunteers, who offer service in over 50 non-profit and public agencies and organizations. RSVP links those in need with those who serve.
Chenango County has over 13,000 seniors, and the growing Boomers population are adding to that group each and every day. Professional reports indicate that older adults experience meaningful improvements in their mental and physical health when volunteering. Volunteer opportunities vary from weekly service to a few times per year.
Some of the organizations that benefit from the expertise of RSVP volunteers are:
- Hospice & Palliative Care of Chenango County
- American Red Cross
- New York State Veterans' Home
- Chenango County Area Agency on Aging
- Catholic Charities - Roots & Wings
- Habitat for Humanity
- Northeast Classic Car Museum
- Valley View Manor
RSVP draws on a valuable community asset: the wisdom and life experiences of its older members.
The community also benefits from the RSVP Osteoporosis Prevention Exercise classes, Christmas for Seniors Program, educational seminars, and recreational bus outings. These services operate with the involvement of the RSVP volunteers, staff and Advisory Council.
