Literacy Volunteers of Chenango County

Literacy Volunteers of Chenango County (LVCC) is an organization dedicated to helping people achieve personal goals through literacy. LVCC provides free, confidential and one-on-one tutoring for adults in basic literacy and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), thanks to funds from the New York State Education Department, the Chenango United Way and many individual and corporate donors. LVCC serves adults, 16 and above, who read below an 8th grade level and have a desire to learn and improve their basic reading, writing, math or non-native English skills.

An estimated 14% of adults in Chenango County read at or below a 4th grade level and 25% do not have a High School Diploma. At least 42% of adults in Chenango County have some difficulty with basic reading, writing or math. Many adults have difficulty reading the newspaper, filling out a job application, communicating with a child's teacher, reading the directions on a medicine bottle or even a bedtime story.
The impact of LVCC reaches far beyond the adult learners and volunteers that it touches to affect the community as a whole.
When more adults and families are able to achieve personal goals through enhanced literacy, are more likely to:
- Be more self reliant.
- Get better jobs.
- Re-invest their income in the community economy.
- Foster literacy and school success in their children.
- Build self esteem and feel more confident about themselves.
- Get involved in volunteer activities in the community.
- Advocate for themselves and vote.
LVCC is an affiliate of ProLiteracy America, a program of Opportunities for Chenango, Inc. and a United Way funded program.
