Section
8 rental assistance is a federally-funded program, via HUD
(Housing & Urban Development), that helps families
acquire safe living quarters through rent subsidation.
Section 8 assistance helps:
- to
provide improved living conditions for very low-income
families while maintaining their rent payments at an
affordable level.
- to
promote freedom of housing choice and location for
lower income and minority families throughout the area
covered by the Section 8 voucher program.
- to
provide decent, safe, and sanitary housing for eligible
participants.
- to
provide an incentive to private property owners to
rent to lower income families by offering timely assistance
payments.
Eligible
participants are given a voucher toward the cost of rent,
and are responsible for the balance of the rent expense.
This has the added benefit of encouraging participants
to develop financial responsibility.
