Family Support Services

Beyond Shelter
  • Provides support to families whose primary barrier to self-sufficiency is adequate and affordable housing.
  • The family is provided with an apartment for a period of 6-12 months and receives intensive case management.
  • The family pays a modest 20-30% of their income after 3 months. Monies are put into a savings account for future housing expenses.
  • Collaboration with the Pennysaver, the United Way, and the Episcopal Church.
  • Goal: Family self-sufficiency and asset building.
Family Services
  • Short term screening.
  • Referral service to customers.
  • Maintain community resource file.
  • Build front-line partnerships with community agencies and programs.
  • Goal: Triage customers into OFC, Inc. family development programs for self-sufficiency and asset building.
Financial Literacy/Assets for Independence
  • Basic family financial counseling services and asset-building program VITA, WAP, etc.
  • Credit management and repair program.
  • Education aimed at recognizing and avoiding abusive lending practices.
  • Financial literacy for youth through partnerships with communities and school systems.
  • Agency and community referrals for budget counseling services.
  • Small business and micro enterprise technical assistance.
  • Outreach workshops in outlying communities.
  • Goal: Support customers in setting goals to meet basic family needs, retain and keep jobs, and building assets to obtain self-sufficiency.
Keys to Success
  • Vehicle dispersement and loan program.
    New York State Department of Labor grant- (3/1/03-3/31/05) with 3-5 year renewal.
  • Eligibility requirements are that the applicant has to be the head of household with a minor child and TANF eligible.
  • Applicants have to complete defensive driving, vehicle maintenance, and financial literacy classes.
  • Goal: To help maintain stable employment, self-sufficiency, and asset building.
Starting Over
  • An asset building, strength based program, in collaboration with The Place, Catholic Charities, Office of Employment and Training, YMCA, and other appropriate services.
  • Serving families who are at risk of their children entering foster care, and families reunifying with their children who are in foster care.
  • Intensive case management services and support to the entire family for six months.
  • Goal: To keep children with their families.
